I'm excited to spend another school year as part of the second grade team at Mendota!  During my career I have taught first grade, second grade, third grade and sixth grade.  I am a flexible, experienced teacher who has consistently high expectations for students and myself.  My goal for students is that they be enthusiastic, self-directed learners.  I have fun with my students, and we work hard.  Second graders love learning!

I live in Eagan with my husband.  My daughter was just married in July, and she and her husband are both pharmacists in the Twin Cities.   Our family enjoys golf outings, playing board games, team trivia contests and our annual trips to Disney World.

Mendota Elementary is an incredible community school! I am proud of my colleagues and the important work we do with children.  The easiest way to reach me is usually by e-mail.

Scroll to "Documents" at the bottom to find copies of my weekly newsletters, copies of weekly second grade spelling lists and other important second grade information.

Feel free to email me any time with questions, comments or concerns(

GREETINGS FROM ROOM 28!!!        (updated on 5.22.19)

We just finished MAP testing, and the students worked hard.   The big things we are currently working on are geometry, fractions, and researching and writing "Book Creator" books about Polar animals.  We will continue to focus on reading, writing and math through the end of the school year.  Things are busy!!!  We look forward to seeing "Matild" at the Children's Theatre on June 4!!!

This is the last week for Session 4 Enrichment classes and Cougar Wisdom.

Continue to encourage your child to spend some time at home each week on Raz Kids (Reading), DreamBox (math), xtramath, and Freckle (math and reading).

Most second graders LOVE a little snack mid-morning.  Please send something neat, pretty healthy and easy to open if your child wants a snack.

Students may bring water bottles filled with water to school each day (PLEASE LABEL).

Thanks for your support from home!

You might want to try Bedtime Math:

Encourage your child to spend some time on Raz-Kids and DreamBox.

RAZ-KIDS LOGIN LINK (after the school year begins):
Your child should go to the following link and enter cwhelan5 at the first prompt and isd197 at the second prompt:
Note: The routine for Raz-Kids is listen to the book, read the book (silently or orally), take the quiz.  Raz-Kids is meant to be done independently but it is helpful to have students read some of the books orally to an adult.  The questions can be tricky.

DREAMBOX LOGIN LINK (after the school year begins):

‚ÄčYour child should go to the following link and enter their two passwords:
Note: DreamBox is meant to be done independently to get the full effect of the program.  Students should spend about an hour per week on DreamBox (school and home combined).

Students love learning about animals and are intrigued with learning about noteworthy people too.  Remember to include biographies and animal books in the nonfiction mix when you read to/with your child at home.  Both genres are rich in vocabulary.  Our school has purchased access to a wonderful research site called PebbleGo.  Students can read and listen to information on animals and people.

(passwords are mendota1 and isd197)

SPELLING LISTS: Weekly spelling lists may be viewed on Mendota's Second Grade Website.  If your child uses Spelling City at home, remind him/her to go to Mendota’s “Second Grade” lists at
